INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The Indiana Department of Transportation has announced new paving specifications that allow more use of recycled materials.

INDOT says it will allow increased amounts of reclaimed asphalt and roofing shingles to be included in hot mix asphalt.

Contractors already re-use concrete and asphalt pavement removed during road projects for the highway’s sub-base and shoulder.

INDOT estimates increasing the amount of reclaimed asphalt pavement and recycled roofing shingles within asphalt mixes could save $10 million to $15 million on annual paving expenses.
