ELKHART COUNTY — More good economic news could be on the way for Elkhart County: 130 new jobs.

A Minnesota-based company is considering moving into a vacant plant on Beck Drive just east of Elkhart. ABC Bus would overhaul and refurbish motor coaches.

The company is requesting a $19,000 tax abatement on the property over seven years. Given the county’s high unemployment numbers, the county council would like to see the request go through.

“We’ve got too many unemployed people here, and we really need to get them back to work,” said John Letherman, county council president. “So my attitude, and the attitude of the council, is we’re going to do whatever we can to try to help put these people back to work. We’re in competition with every single county, every single community in the United States right now for jobs.”

The company says it will generate about $200,000 in state and local income taxes, and 130 new jobs.
