When you carry a balance on your credit card you will be given a minimum payment that must be remitted each month. This is based on a percentage of your overall balance. Even though it is best to not carry a balance, if you find yourself in this situation you need to know your options. At the very least you need to pay the minimum.
Why should I pay the minimum? For one, it will keep your account in good standing. If you don’t pay the minimum your credit card company is going to report your payment as overdue. In turn, your credit score will begin to fall. Along with this, paying the minimum will help to bring down your balance. Although it will only come down a very little bit, at least you are making progress.
If you know what is good for you, you will always pay more than the minimum required payment. But sometimes life gets in the way and makes this very difficult. Even if you are in a tight spot and money is hard to come by, if you can scrap together the minimum payment you will buy yourself time until the next month. Who knows, you may have to pay the minimum for several months until things get better and you can get rid of your balance once and for all.
The next time you receive your credit card statement pay special attention to the minimum required payment. If you at least pay this much your account will never be marked as overdue.
