Before we get started, it is important to note that all college students should check with their parents before applying for a credit card. This is not something to take lightly. Making the wrong decisions can lead to financial ruin. Even though there are risks involved with carrying a credit card, there are ways that this can benefit a college student.
If you are in college, you know that there are expenses that come up from time to time – some are much more important than others. With a credit card you may be able to better manage these expenses. Of course, you have to make sure you are responsible enough to determine what is necessary and what you can do without for the time being.
Take for example a student who only uses his credit card to purchase books. This is a great idea because it allows you to act fast, and then payoff the money spent all at once when the next statement arrives. Just make sure you are only buying books. A college bookstore can be full of goodies. Do you have the will power to stay away from items that can cause your credit card debt to spiral out of control?
College students also spend a lot of time traveling. Whether it be back and forth from home or to visit friends, spending time on the road or in the air is common. With this, an emergency could come up at anytime. This includes anything from a flat tire to running out of gas to getting stuck in an airport. If a travel emergency arises, it is always nice to have a credit card that you can rely on if need be.
There are both pros and cons to carrying a credit card as a college student. If you or your child is interested in this, make sure you consider the advantages.
