There is no denying that student credit cards are popular. College students all over the country carry plastic. Each semester more and more students apply for a credit card for one reason or the next. While this may not be a good idea all of the time and for every student, there are some situations when this makes perfect sense.
Are you responsible? If so, you are better suited than others for a student credit card. It is those who are not responsible with their money and finances who find trouble. If you know you will take your credit card and go on a spending spree you are better off staying away for the time being and continuing to use cash for all expenses. Only you know if you trust yourself to be responsible with a student credit card.
Emergencies do happen. For this reason, having a credit card is a great idea. The problem is drawing a line between an emergency and a “want.” If your car breaks down and you need a tow, that is an emergency. If you want to go out to dinner with your friends, it is another story entirely. This goes back to being responsible.
Before you apply for a student credit card ask your parents for advice. At the very least they can help you shop around for the best card, and give you tips for staying on track and not getting into financial trouble.
If you think that a student credit card is right for you begin to search around for the many offers that are available. Just make sure you are doing the right thing before you sign your application and send it off.
