The taxi industry is set to crackdown on drivers who scam passengers that use credit cards as payment.

As part of a two-week operation, authorities will root out cabbies who fail to process credit card payments using the in-car eftpos terminal, the Herald Sun reported.

Public transport minister Martin Pakula said that some drivers still process the transaction manually – a procedure that is more open to fraud as dockets can be altered after the customer has signed it.

“Credit card fraud is a common complaint received by industry watchdog, the Victorian Taxi Directorate, but this is just the tip of the iceberg,” he added.

Under the new industry initiative, drivers who do not accept eftpos payments can be fined $292 on the spot.
