BOULDER, Colo. (AP) — Real Goods Solar Inc. has been selling solar panels for homes for years, but its latest mail-order catalog goes one step further: The Louisville (LOO’-iss-vil), Colo., company offers a whole solar house, with a choice of traditional or cedar siding.

The factory-built, one-story house by Boulder-based Solar Village Homes goes for $90,000 to $120,000. It has energy-efficient and energy-producing features, including solar electrical and hot water systems. Setting it up could cost $40,000 to $100,000 extra.

Solar Village co-founder Mark Kostovny says it’s possible for solar home owners to have no energy bills, depending on their consumption.

Now they’re bracing for another hit: A 10 percent tax on tanning bed use starts nationwide this July, part of the federal health care overhaul.

“Will I be here next year? I don’t know,” said Kristi Alpers, owner of Cherry Creek Tans in Denver. T

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The Indiana Department of Transportation has announced new paving specifications that allow more use of recycled materials.

INDOT says it will allow increased amounts of reclaimed asphalt and roofing shingles to be included in hot mix asphalt.

Contractors already re-use concrete and asphalt pavement removed during road projects for the highway’s sub-base and shoulder.

INDOT estimates increasing the amount of reclaimed asphalt pavement and recycled roofing shingles within asphalt mixes could save $10 million to $15 million on annual paving expenses.
